Short Story

Blue. The entire apartment has grown cold. The soft and gentle song of the birds outside my window woke me up. Such careless creatures. I envy their freedom. The rich whistles that are their songs fill my mind. Yet another boring Wednesday has begun. I can feel my head aching after yet another night of heavy drinking. The empty bottles of liquor decorating my entire room. I know I am wasting my time on this earth, but it’s not like I have anything better to do. I toss and turn for a while, checking my social media when the annoying little ray of sunlight flashes in my eyes. I stay and stare into nothingness. Quietness fill my head as I start to realize that eventually I have to get up. It’s surprisingly cold for the beginning of September. I take off my cozy blanket and welcome the freezing air. I place my feet on the floor and instantly regret my decision to get out of bed. A sudden chill gets sent down my spine as I groan and mumble under my breath.

“Damn you early lonely mornings. I will never understand how some people enjoy them.” I whisper as I make my way into the kitchen. The sound of grounding coffee beans fills my entire apartment and intensifies my headache, I suppose it’s only because of the hangover. I grab my favorite sponge Bob Cope and toss his sugars inside. I’ve never liked sour coffee. It always made my throat hurt and killed my satisfaction. I open the curtains and let the light inside. The blue and gray tones of my apartment disappear. To be completely honest with you, most days I don’t open my curtains at all. I prefer sitting in the dark.

My entire body feels so yucky and disgusting. I reek of the wretched smell of death and mistakes, and remebering how last night went, I’m not surprised. Realizing that the stench will kill my nose completely, I decide to go and take a warm long shower. One of the best decisions I have ever made. Barely getting up from the couch, I take slow steps towards my bathroom making time to look at the old pictures of me and my friends, and family hanging in the hallway. Such beautiful last memories. Not a day goes by without missing them. I have almost reached the door when I spot something peculiar. A photo I have taken for sacred is ruined. No flashbacks. No memories. How could I have forgotten? What wrong have I done? I felt my eyes fill to the brim with salty tears ready to run down my face. The photo of them was ruined. Their face was cut out of it. How can I be so stupid, so careless? I can feel the walls closing in as my mind sinks into anxiety and regret. Snapping quickly out of it after hearing my cat’s meowing, I decide to simply go and take a shower, and try to forget about the entire situation.

“Look at yourself.” I could barely stare myself in the eyes. I miss them so much and now the only memory of them is gone. With a heavy sigh I enter my shower cabin. My heartbeat grows faster, my pulse speeds up, my heart is about to explode inside my chest. I can feel the panic filling my entire body. As my eyes start to blur, I can feel it. That’s when I feel the touch. I can feel the warmth of my hands spreading through my body. And yet there is nothing, only the sound of the running water. It seems familiar. I miss that sensation so much... I miss them. It is as though my mind was playing tricks, their voice inside my head. The Invisible Touch goes through my skin exploring every defect. Every scar. Every stretch. The pleasant burning in my skin grows more and more and I close my eyes. I let them take the lead. “I can feel the heat closing in.”
